Visualization and Analysis of Full-waveform Airborne Laser Scanner Data
نویسندگان
چکیده
Recent development of airborne laser scanner systems allows for digitization and recording of the full-waveform, i.e. the received signal of the reflected laser pulse. In this paper, some visualizations and analysis of waveform data are presented. The purpose is to study how waveform data can be used to extract additional information. As a first step, 3D point data are extracted and parameterized. The approach for extracting 3D point data is based on unsupervised learning where a mixture of Gaussian distributions are fitted to the waveforms to detect the peaks using the EM algorithm. The performance of this approach is compared to the real-time processing echo extraction by the system. The number of points extracted per waveform is studied and examples will illustrate where additional points have been extracted. * Corresponding author.

Laser Pulse Variations and Their Influence on Radiometric Calibration of Full-waveform Laser Scanner Data
Full-waveform laser scanning extends the information content of “conventional” laser scanning by storing the temporal profile of both the emitted laser pulse and its echoes. This allows for calculating radiometric quantities in addition to the geometric data. This radiometric information needs to be calibrated in order to enable comparison among flight strips of the same laser scanner campaign ...
متن کاملAnalysis of Full-waveform Lidar Data for Classification of Urban Areas
In contrast to conventional airborne multi-echo laser scanner systems, full-waveform (FW) lidar systems are able to record the entire emitted and backscattered signal of each laser pulse. Instead of clouds of individual 3D points, FW devices provide connected 1D profiles of the 3D scene, which contain more detailed and additional information about the structure of the illuminated surfaces. This...
متن کاملAlgorithms and Methods of Airborne Laser Scanning for Forest Measurements
Extracting forest variables from airborne laser scanner has less than 10 years of history. During that time, however, a new area in the field of forest studies has emerged. This paper describes existing algorithms and methods of airborne laser scanning that are used for forest measurements. The methods are divided into the following categories: 1) extraction of DTM (digital terrain model), 2) e...
متن کاملFrom Single-pulse to Full-waveform Airborne Laser Scanners: Potential and Practical Challenges
Airborne laser scanning, often referred to as lidar or laser altimetry, is a remote sensing technique which measures the round-trip time of emitted laser pulses to determine the topography of the Earth’s surface. While the first commercially available airborne laser scanners recorded only the time of one backscattered pulse, state-of-the-art systems measure first and last pulse; some are able t...
متن کاملAssessment of Low Density Full-Waveform Airborne Laser Scanning for Individual Tree Detection and Tree Species Classification
The paper investigated the possible gains in using low density (average 1 pulse/m 2 ) full-waveform (FWF) airborne laser scanning (ALS) data for individual tree detection and tree species classification and compared the results to the ones obtained using discrete return laser scanning. The aim is to approach a low-cost, fully ALS-based operative forest inventory method that is capable of provid...
